AEO for startups: how to become the answer in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews
Answer engine optimization without the agency: which questions to target, where the answers get sourced, and why a Reddit thread outperforms a landing page for being quoted.
Answer engines don't rank ten links; they give one answer and, increasingly, name their sources. For a startup that means the goal isn't “rank for budgeting app” — it's “be the app the assistant names when a freelancer asks how to handle irregular income.” Two things decide that: whether your page explains what you are, and whether people elsewhere say you're good.
Step 1 — pick the questions, not the keywords
List the five questions a buyer would type or say the week before they buy. “Best habit tracker for ADHD.” “How do freelancers budget with irregular income?” Phrase them as questions; assistants are answering questions, not matching keywords.
Step 2 — make your page the clean reference
- One sentence at the top that says exactly what the product is and who it's for. Engines quote it.
- An FAQ that answers the five questions plainly, with FAQ schema.
- Honest comparison content on your own site (“X vs us”), because engines love comparisons and will use yours if nobody else's exists.
Step 3 — get corroborated where engines look
Ask the assistants your five questions and read the citations. You'll find review sites, a few publishers, and — most often — Reddit threads. That's not anecdote; it's the top cited domain. The thread that gets cited is a member of the community describing a real experience with your product, in the subreddit where the question lives.
Step 4 — run the loop
- Monthly: ask the five questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google. Note mentions and sources.
- Quarterly: one new honest thread per question, from a creator in the right community.
- Always: answer the questions people ask in those threads. The follow-ups are where the specificity — and the quotes — come from.
For the theory behind it: what GEO is and why Reddit is its raw material. For the money: what a creator post costs.
One warning. Fake reviews and undisclosed promotion don't just risk Reddit bans — engines increasingly weigh trust signals, and a moderator's “this is an ad” comment is a citation too.
Questions people ask
- AEO vs GEO — same thing?
- Close cousins. AEO started with featured snippets and voice answers: structure content to be the direct answer. GEO extends it to generative engines that synthesise and cite. In practice you do both: a clear page that answers the question, and third-party sources that corroborate it.
- Do I need schema markup for AEO?
- It helps engines parse your page (FAQ, product, organisation schema). It does nothing for whether a Reddit thread recommends you, which is where most citations come from.
- How long until it works?
- A well-placed thread can be cited within weeks once indexed; consistent presence takes a quarter or two. Treat it like SEO, not like ads.
