What is GEO (generative engine optimization) — and why Reddit threads are its raw material

SEO gets you ranked; GEO gets you cited. What generative engines actually pull from, why reddit.com is the #1 cited domain, and the practical loop a small team can run.

GEO — generative engine optimization — is the practice of making your product the thing an AI assistant mentions when someone asks “what should I use for X?”. Where SEO competes for a position in a list, GEO competes for a sentence in an answer. And the answer has to come from somewhere.

What generative engines actually pull from

  • Retrieval, not just training. ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode fetch live pages and cite them. Fresh, specific pages win.
  • Answer-shaped content. “I used A and B for a year; B broke on X” maps directly onto “compare A and B”. Marketing pages describe; threads testify.
  • Corroboration. The same product recommended by different people in different threads reads as consensus. One glossy page reads as a claim.
  • Licensed and indexed. Reddit's data deals and deep Google indexing put it in the pipes at both training and retrieval time.

GEO vs SEO, practically

Your SEO asset is your page. Your GEO asset is other people talking about you in the places engines trust. You still need the page (engines follow the link to confirm what a product is), but the citation comes from the thread. That reorders the marketing priority list: community presence before content volume.

The GEO loop for a small team

  • Write down 5 questions you want to be the answer to, phrased as a person would ask an assistant.
  • Ask the assistants. Log what they cite. Nine times out of ten there's a Reddit thread in the list.
  • Find the people already answering in those subreddits — regulars, sometimes moderators. Filter by community and karma; verify the account on Reddit.
  • Brief for honesty. Comparisons, workflows, “what broke”. Disclosed where the subreddit requires it.
  • Re-ask quarterly. Threads compound; check the citations again in three months, not tomorrow.

Questions people ask

What's the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO optimises pages to rank in a list of links. GEO optimises for being the source an AI assistant cites or paraphrases when it answers a question. The signals overlap — clear, specific, well-structured content — but GEO rewards first-person, comparative, frequently updated sources, which is why forums do so well.
Is GEO just for big brands?
No. The most-cited sources are threads where ordinary people compare things. A small brand that gets honestly discussed in the right subreddit is doing GEO whether it calls it that or not.
Can I measure GEO?
Roughly: ask the assistants your target questions monthly and log whether you're mentioned and what they cite. Semrush and others sell AI-visibility tracking if you need it at scale.
